A History of Simpson in Europe
On 14th July, 1933 Simpson licensed their patents for the Simpson Mix-Muller intensive mixer to Société Anonyme des Acieries Georges Fischer (+GF+) in Schaffhausen, Switzerland and began the development of our business in Europe. For the next 40 years thousands of Simpson Mix-Muller® and other Simpson equipment were supplied to the European foundry industry by +GF+. Other partnerships were also established such as the important cooperation with Augusts Ltd. in Halifax, England that began in 1936 and with Bonvillain et Ronceray in Choisy-Le-Roi, France in the late 1950’s. In 1967 Simpson founded Simpson Maschinen AG in Zug, Switzerland and began to produce more of the Simpson product line including mixers for the chemical process industries and the introduction of other innovative Simpson technologies to the foundry industry such as the Simpson Multi-Cooler® continuous sand cooling and pre-mixing system, the Simpson Multi-Mull® continuous mixer and the Simpson Even-Flo® pneumatic sand reclaimer. Eventually, the relationship with +GF+ and other partners ended and Simpson Maschinen AG became the main Simpson presence in Europe.
In the second half of the 1990’s Simpson grew substantially in North America and acquired many important technologies that remain core parts of the product line today. In 1995 Simpson acquired the Dietert Automation product line from George Fischer Foundry Systems, Inc. provide automated control of the Simson mixers. In 1998 Simpson acquired Beardsley & Piper LLC which brought the globally recognized Speedmullor® mixer into the product line. In 1999 Simpson acquired the sand testing equipment business from Ing. Ricardo Gerosa in Argentina.
Finally, in 2000 Simpson acquired Hartley Controls Corporation to further expand and improve the technology in foundry sand preparation control and automation technology. These four acquisitions substantially expanded Simpson’s portfolio of globally competitive, leading technologies and expanded the customer base – particularly in North America.
In 2008 our focus shifted to growth and strengthening in the important EMEAR (Europe, Middle East, Africa and Russian) markets. In 2008 Simpson acquired the former +GF+ brand of foundry sand control and testing equipment from DISA Industrie AG. The product line was transferred from its traditional home in Schaffhausen, Switzerland to the Simpson location near Zug, Switzerland. The former +GF+ sand testing equipment and the former Gerosa brand equipment were combined and consolidated into the Simpson Analytics product line which is now the world’s leading technology for quality and process control in sand foundries and molding material suppliers worldwide.
To prepare for the next stage of growth, Simpson Technologies (Deutschland) GmbH was founded in Alfeld, Germany in 2017. In July, 2018 Simpson Technologies (Deutschland) GmbH acquired Webac Gesellschaft für Maschinenbau mbH in Euskrichen, Germany. Webac has a history of more than 85 years of experience in the foundry industry dating back to 1931 with the founding of the AB Westin & Backlund company in Stockholm, Sweden. The growing demand for machines and complete plants in Europe led to the founding in 1962 of a German subsidiary, Webac Gesellschaft für Maschinenbau mbH. Most of the technology for Webac was licensed from the American company Beardsley & Piper including the famous Speedmullor mixer. Webac quickly grew to become a major supplier of foundry technology and plants to the European market.
From summer 2018 through early 2021 a variety of restructuring projects took place including the closure of Simpson Technologies GmbH in Switzerland, the divestiture of the small Webac subsidiary Webac Maskin AB in Sweden and finally the full merger and integration of Webac into Simpson Technologies GmbH. As part of the merger Simpson Technologies (Deutschland) GmbH was renamed Simpson Technologies GmbH.
Beginning in March, 2021 a simplified, streamlined, reorganized and strengthened Simpson Technologies GmbH will serve our valued customers in the EMEAR region. We will continue to invest in our business to improve our service and introduce new, innovative technologies to the EMEAR market.
